In an attention economy where the ability to focus and process is shorter than ever, one of the most crucial aspects of successful social media posts starts with understanding your audience and speaking directly to their needs and interests. It’s essential for brand owners to create content that gives people reason to stop scrolling. Many times when they do stop scrolling, it is because they feel seen and heard.
Here are some quick tips to be successful in your social media efforts…
1. Start with a Plan
Define your business goals, understand your target audience, and focus on the type of content that will be of interest and value to your customers or clients. Your plan should outline a posting schedule, content to focus on, engagement tactics, and growth strategies. Also, be willing to adapt your strategy as social media trends are just like fast fashion, in one day and out the next !
2. Be Timely
Social Media is meant to be quick and nimble. Long lead times from concept to approval to posting can work against you. Flexibility and willingness to evolve quickly are key to long-term success.
3. Be Relevant
When creating content, use insights to create content that resonates with your audience. Create content around topics that your audience is interested in, and address common questions, pain points, and trends.
Be sure to optimize and analyze which content medium your audience resonates with (ex, short form videos, long from videos, infographics, articles) What is getting the most engagement? Focus on producing more of what works.
Identify gaps in the market or areas for improvement in your industry, based on customer feedback. (i.e. What your audience is complaining about currently about your brand or services or a competitor’s brand or service.) Make sure to keep up to date with your industry trends and insights so you can use those to create product offerings that will help you stay ahead of the competition.
4. Listen to Your Audience
Social listening is about monitoring and analyzing social conversations in order to gain insights into market trends, customer behavior, and industry chatter. Listen to your customers and what is going on in your industry in order to improve your marketing strategies. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while social listening are:
- How is my brand perceived compared to competitors?
- Identify your strengths and weaknesses relative to competitors.
- Who are the influencers and thought leaders in my industry?
- Keep note of industry leaders to either collaborate or learn from their content strategies
- What feedback do customers have about my products or services?
- Listen and implement feedback from your consumers
- How are my marketing campaigns performing in real-time?
- Monitor and adjust your social strategy based highest engagement and positive feedback
- What unmet needs or desires are expressed by my audience?
- Identify gaps in the market that your brand can fill!
- What type of content is resonating with my audience?
- Analyze which posts receive the most engagement for future content creation. Ie. infographics, reels, TikTok. What topics do best?
- What topics do your consumers show interest in online?
- Keep up to date with your audience interest to better understand and speak to them
- What are your audiences’ top needs, goals and priorities?
- Understand your audience and their pain points in order to better solve their problems
5. Set Realistic Expectations & Be Patient
While ambition is essential, aim high but be realistic about what you can achieve within a specific timeframe. For example, aspiring to gain one million followers in three months is not realistic without other concentrated marketing efforts. Instead, set attainable milestones that reflect steady progress, such as increasing your follower count by 5% each month. A thousand followers does not equal a thousand customers. The real value in social media isn’t in the follower count, but is in audience awareness and engagement.
If you are talking to everyone, you’re talking to no one. Focus on building a community who you see, hear and understand well. Your customers are inundated with ads and messaging from all directions, usually making them less loyal and less likely to purchase than ever! Fostering a deep sense of connection and loyalty is necessary in order to sell.
Here is an example below:
“I recently met a business owner who made $1 million in profit from just under 6,000 Instagram followers. She helps registered dietitians bill insurance correctly, a very niche market. Her Instagram reach is only around 2,800 people per month, yet she still makes 10 low-ticket sales per day and 3 high-ticket sales a week.”
Connection + Community = More Sales
While growing a social media presence for your brand, make sure to focus on your inputs (daily posting) instead of the outputs (views, likes, follower) as it can take months to build a loyal social media following. Remain patient and stay committed to your plan, even when progress seems slow.
6. Engage & Interact
Social media is a two-way street. Engage with your followers by responding to comments, messages, and mentions. Active engagement not only boosts your visibility but also fosters a loyal community around your brand. People love it when their favorite brand responds in the comments!
Plus, having an engaged social media account helps you stay accountable when social listening.
Wrapping It Up…
By following these steps and remaining dedicated to your social media strategy, you can achieve consistent results and growth in your social media presence. Remember, understanding your audience and engaging with them meaningfully and authentically is the key to building a successful and sustainable brand online.
